Wooden decking should always be stained; to protect the wood from damage from light and moisture. Ultraviolet rays from the sun can fade the wood while moisture can lead to cracking.

Staining your own decking can save a lot of money, but it is a permanent thing so be careful. There are lots of products out there including oil-based and water-based stains and wood conditioners.

Ensure that decking is clean and dry before you begin to add the stain. Wash it if necessary, and leave to dry for at least 24 hours before applying the stain. Try to pick a good weather day to avoid rain hitting the stained decking while it is drying, and this will usually take a few hours.

When working with wood stains, be sure to protect your eyes and skin with safety glasses and rubber gloves. If it can stain wood it will stain your skin and clothes, so be prepared.

If you’re slightly unsure about a wood stain, apply a coat to a piece of scrap wood first so you can see what it will look like after it has been applied.

To optimise the consistency of the stain, apply a thin coat of wood conditioner, allow to dry and then stain. This will help to reduce blotches or areas of concentration of the stain.

Oil-based stains are the most common type, being made up of dyes, pigments and mineral spirits. Stir the can before applying the stain, to ensure the most even colour. Oil-based stains will produce fumes so try not to breathe in the fumes too much and work in a well-ventilated area. You might want to even consider working in a face mask.

Oil-based stains offer more protection against sun damage since they keep the deck moist and prevent it from drying out.

The stain can be applied with a brush or rag. Brushes will work with and against the grain. The most important thing is getting a nice even coat on the wood. If you are in search of a light stain then you need to wipe the compound off immediately, or leave it on for 10 minutes or so for a darker stain. If you later decide you want a darker stain you can simply apply a new coat.

When wiping excess stain off the wood, wipe with the grain of the wood, as this will help to ensure that the stain goes inside the wood instead of sitting on top.

For the best results, stain pressure-treated garden decking as soon after the deck is built as possible, and then annually every Spring. A little bit of maintenance will keep your decking and your garden looking neat and sweet.
