Artificial Grass – Innovation for Gardens & Interiors
74Maintaining a luscious, green lawn is by no means effortless. Manicured lawns don’t occur naturally and they are usually the result of a lot of hard work, water, trimming, cutting and other maintenance. Lawns can take weeks and months to recover from adverse weather conditions or harsh usage, so it’s easy to understand why artificial turf has proved such a hit in the garden. Artificial grass means effortless lawns for home-owners which require very little maintenance.
Because of its robust nature and its resilience to testing weather conditions, artificial turf has also become a popular surface for playing many different sports. Football, rugby, tennis and hockey are all regularly played on artificial turf pitches, which means no more muddy, dry or overgrown patches needing water or mowing. Artificial turf can withstand the strong friction involved in professional sporting competitions, and so offers a fair and un-changing surface.
But artificial grass is not just proving a great alternative to the real thing – it’s also being used in places where real grass refuses to grow. Innovative gardeners, garden designers and interiors designers are using artificial in all sorts of interesting ways which can surprise and delight people.
Have you ever seen grass on the ceiling, or perhaps on the wall? Artificial grass can dwell where real grass can’t, so it’s great for rooftops, and has even been used as swimming pool surrounds. Artificial grass is resistant to heat and water, and can be washed clean unlike the real thing. It’s even being used for interiors, and many Irish bars around the world are sporting artificial grass on the floor, to help remind them of their green and pleasantIreland. It seems there’s no limit to the places in which artificial grass can be used, so don’t be surprised if you end up with artificial turf as a car interior or clothing fabric sometime soon.
It’s wrong to say that artificial grass is zero-maintenance, but this depends a lot upon its use. In a pub environment artificial grass could be vacuumed or cleaned with a scrubber drier, while in the garden it is probably wise to wash the turf from time to time if it is being used by any pets or wildlife. Weeds can still grow in artificial turf, if birds were to drop seeds on it for example. Also if the lawn becomes littered with leaves or other debris, it is wise to sweep or remove these items to ensure that mould does not begin to grow.
